Getting Started
How do I join the club?
Create a forum account, read the welcome thread, introduce yourself, join our WhatsApp group for discussions and day-to-day coordination, and follow the Events category for announcements.
Do I need a telescope or prior experience?
No. Many members attend with binoculars or just their eyes. Members often share telescopes at star parties, and beginners are welcome at every event.
What's the difference between the forum and WhatsApp?
The forum is where we post event announcements and longer discussions. Our WhatsApp group is for community chat, quick questions, and day-to-day coordination. When an event is coming up, separate coordination groups are created on WhatsApp for registered participants.
Is there any membership fee or age restriction?
No registration fee and no age restriction. People below 18 should bring a parent-signed consent letter for events involving travel outside the city. If you are unsure about requirements for a specific event, ask on that event thread.
Do you have an office?
We are primarily based out of our forum, though we meet at various locations around Chennai and beyond for star parties and city meetups.
Is the club only for people in Chennai?
Our events are centred around Chennai, but anyone nearby can join online, follow along on the forum, and travel to star parties when they can.
Events and Attending
How do star parties and meetups work?
We plan around the Moon: star parties near the new moon and city meetups near the full moon, usually on the nearest weekend. Star party dates are confirmed closer to the event based on weather.
How do I find out about upcoming events?
Follow the Events category on our forum, check the Events page on this website, and watch WhatsApp for last-minute updates.
How do I RSVP for an event?
Register using the link in the forum event post — each announcement includes a registration link. After registering, event-specific WhatsApp groups are created for participants to coordinate carpooling, meeting points, and last-minute changes.
What should I bring to a star party?
Comfortable clothes, a red flashlight, insect repellent, and water or snacks. Binoculars or a star chart are optional but helpful. Star parties usually mean travel to a darker location outside the city.
How do weather cancellations work?
Star party dates can shift based on cloud cover. Check the forum event thread and WhatsApp on the day of the event for the latest call.
Can my school or college request an outreach session?
We run volunteer outreach when capacity allows — school programs and sidewalk astronomy. Reach out by email with your request and we will see what we can arrange.
What is the Night Sky Passport?
A member-built learning tool for working through the constellations at your own pace. It is optional — not a membership requirement.
Do you run astrophotography workshops?
Yes, occasionally. We also run hands-on sessions on telescope basics and visual observing. Follow the Events category for announcements.
Equipment
I am new to astronomy. Which telescope should I buy?
If you are just getting started, do not buy a telescope yet. Begin with naked-eye observations or binoculars and learn the basics of astronomy and visual observations first.
Do you sell telescopes or endorse brands?
No. We share what we have learned so members can make their own informed choices.
What We Don't Do
Do you offer in-home visits or private telescope training?
We’re not able to offer in-home visits or one-on-one training. Chennai Astronomy Club is run entirely by volunteers — we share what we know at public events and in the forum, not as a paid or private service.
Do you charge membership fees?
No. Chennai Astronomy Club is free to join. The club runs on volunteer time, shared knowledge, and shared equipment.
Do you run this like a business?
No. We are a volunteer-run, non-profit community. Everyone who helps keep the club going does it because they care about making the night sky more accessible.
